Don Budge Grand Slam Tennis Program
Annual Student Tennis Incentive Grant/Scholarship

Our Mission:
To continue to recognize Pike County resident Don Budge, Tennis Hall of Fame member and the United State’s first and (to date) only male Tennis Grand Slam winner, for his leadership and commitment to serve as a role model, his dedication to excellence in the following: establishing personal and team goals, training for athletics, tennis competition, tennis as a lifetime activity to enhance a person holistically, patriotism, positive ideals, community service, setting high standards of sportsmanship, character building, and willingness to help other professional and recreational players achieve their goals.

In recognition of Don Budge’s outstanding historic role, we seek each school year to distribute a grant/scholarship to an individual student with a residence in Pike County or Port Jervis school districts who attends a public or private school in the district or outside the district. Also qualifying for a scholarship/grant  are students who have residency in Pike County school districts who attend a not-for profit school for the developmentally challenged individuals and are recognized by the official regional Pennsylvania Mental Health/Mental Retardation (MH/MR) organization or the equivalent organizations in New York State and New Jersey serving within state-certified Pike or Port Jervis school districts. Students from either category, who exhibit athletic skill and outstanding effort in tennis, do well in academic endeavors, demonstrate sportsmanship, teamwork, community involvement, or any of the missions listed above, would qualify to apply. Each grant/scholarship to a student will be a maximum of $500 each year from whatever funding pool we dedicate to the award for a given year. The committee reserves the right to distribute one or more grant/scholarships or none in a given year.

Each grant/scholarship should be used for the following purposes: to enhance the life skills of the recipient with the purchase of equipment, supplies, and resources related to tennis programs, attend any camp that features tennis activities or a tennis program, take lessons with any tennis pro or participate in a tennis program, participate in any activity that promotes personal life skills development related to a tennis program in which the student or client(s) participate. Unlimited number of students may apply, but total award distribution may not exceed $3000 (or whatever funding is dedicated to the scholarship/grant program for a given year).

The amount available would be posted on this site or may be obtained by contacting the committee. The committee reserves the right to ask for additional material, information, or references, especially if one or more applicants have qualifications that are close enough to make a final award determination difficult.

Grant/scholarships to not-for profit organizations (located in the same school district areas that apply to students) are available. The award may be applied either to further life skills development of clients who are participating in existing developmental tennis programs and/or to help the organization in any activity that helps clients enhance  personal or community skills development that are related to skills enhanced in the tennis program.

Who may apply: any Pike County school district or Port Jervis school district resident of school age, including attendees from public school, private school, tennis academies, or home schooled. Youths or developmentally challenged adults who live in Pike and Port school districts (including those who have a second home and do not attend school within the school district) are eligible.
