Boys’ 18s National Tournament Comes to Philadelphia (189 + 2 pix)
Some of the nation’s top boys tennis talent converged on Penn State’s Delaware County Campus this summer. On July 2, 127 boys competed in the first USTA/2005 National Open Boys’ 18s tournament in Philadelphia.

The Delco Tennis Association and tournament organizer Monica Androsko fought hard to bring the national tournament to Philadelphia this year. “Middle States and the Philadelphia area haven’t always had as many tournament opportunities as other sections of the country,” explained Adrosko. “There’s been a long-time push to help equally distribute events across sections.”

Two Philly boys figured prominently in the debut Philadelphia competition. First seed Chris Racz finished fifth. Maksim Tikhomirov (not pictured) placed sixth. But it was Jared Pinsky of Potomac, MD who went home with the tournament title.

“We were pleased with the turnout for this first tournament and hope to bring even more national tournaments to Philadelphia in the future,” said Androsko.

USTA/MS and PATD were delighted to support this summer’s event. Among the other tournament sponsors: Wilson Sporting Goods, Thorlo Socks, Peak Energy Bars, MVP Sporting Goods, Springton Tennis Club, Wetzelonline.com. and Best Western.

Downingtown Graduate Receives Prestigious Scholarship (156 words + 1 pic)
MassMutual and the USTA are helping make Justin Landis’s first year at Temple University a little easier this fall.

This Downingtown graduate was the recipient of the very prestigious 2005 Mass Mutual Financial Group College Scholarship. MassMutual joined the USTA and its Tennis & Education Foundation to provide scholarships to two college-bound students in every USTA Section in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Competition for the scholarship was stiff, with four times more applicants over last year. Only those seniors who excelled academically and participated extensively in organized tennis programs were considered.

Landis, a graduate of Downingtown HS West was a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish club, creative writing club, indoor track team, and captain of his varsity tennis team. Landis competed in several USTA tournaments and helped teach tennis in the community.

In addition to studying at Temple, Landis hopes to play for the Temple Owls men’s tennis team.

South Philly Kids Get a “Peace” of the Tennis Fun (153 words +2 pix)
South Philly kids, tennis pros and Power 99 radio were making a “racquet” outside the Vare Recreation Center in July. It was all part of MS’ partnership with Power 99’s free summer Peace on the Streets concert series, a program designed to help promote non-violent living.

With music cranking, Middle States and several top Philadelphia tennis pros armed dozens of inner-city youngsters with tennis racquets and guided them through 2 hours of tennis instruction and games. Many of the youngsters had never held a racquet before and relished the chance to learn a new, safe, fun summer and after-school activity.

All children walked away with “Tennis for Life” bracelets and received information about local Philly-based tennis programs. Both Middle States and the Philadelphia Area Tennis District are committed to spreading a “peace” of tennis to adults and children of all walks of life.

Philly’s Freedoms Deliver Stars and Sellout Crowds (88 words + 9 pix)
The stars were shining on the WTT Philadelphia Freedoms 5th Anniversary season this summer. Sellout crowds packed the stands at Cabrini College to catch such tennis legends as Patrick Rafter, John McEnroe, Martina Hingis and Philly’s own Lisa Raymond.

The Freedoms fell just short of capturing the Eastern Conference title, placing second behind the NY Sportimes.

Middle States and the Philadelphia Area Tennis District were among the Freedoms’ most dedicated support, as they helped provide volunteers, ballkids, transportation and special-events help.
