JUNIOR CHALLENGE MATCHES
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The challenge match program offers a great opportunity for juniors to gain
and retain important match playing skills. In between the high school
tennis
seasons and at a time when there are relatively few USTA junior tournaments
in our region, we hope you will take advantage of the challenge ladder
program and enjoy playing others from our junior tennis program. The
ladders
and other junior tennis news items are always posted on the bulletin board by
Court #2.
Please remember that if you play challenge matches during the week, you are
charged the regular court fees of $28 per hour. If you play on Saturday
afternoons however during the scheduled challenge match hours, the court fee
is discounted and you are only charged $10 regardless of how long you play.
Level 3 players play only a pro set of 8 with no ad scoring, and Level 4 and
5 players must complete a best of three sets match also with no ad scoring.
If you have any other questions about the ladders and challenge matches,
please contact Bob Weiss. Also the results of all challenge matches should
be reported to Bob either by a note in his mailbox or by email.

WOMEN'S PRO TOURNEY
AT WESTEND IN JUNE 9-16, 2002
SIGN-UP TO SERVE AS A BALLPERSON DURING THE FINALS AND SEMIS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
For the second year, Westend Racquet Club will be hosting a USTA PROFESSIONAL
WOMEN'S TOURNAMENT in June 2002. The qualifying rounds begin on the 9th of
June and are followed during the week with tournament play. The semifinals
and finals are on Saturday June 15th and Sunday the 16th. If you are
interested in working at the tournament as a volunteer or ball person, please
contact Kim Nolan. We will be training ballpersons on weekends starting in
late April.
Eleven of the pro women who played at the Westend MECCO Tournament in April
2001 played in either the qualifiers or the main draw of the US Open this
past September. Those of you who came to watch matches or served as ball
persons during the Westend tourney last year may have seen Ashley Harkleroad
and Evgenia Koulikovskaya and Mashona Washington, among the other pro women
playing at our club. We hope you will join us again this June to see some
great professional tennis matches and maybe to appear on TV as a ballperson
at the semis or finals:-)

WILD CARD TOURNAMENT
START
TRAINING FOR THE BIG LEAGUES!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Prior to the professional tournament, we will hold a Wild Card women's
tournament at Westend from May 28th to May 31st, 2002. Neil Curtis will
organize the Wild Card tourney and players from the Lehigh Valley are invited
to participate. The winner of this 64 draw tournament gets an automatic
Wild
Card to play in the USTA MECCO pro tourney, so if you think you're ready for
the big leagues you'll want to sign-up for this wild card tourney in May.
We
will provide more info on this tournament in future newsletters.
